When Is a Knuckle Boom the Best  Option for Tight, Obstructed  Worksites?

When Is a Knuckle Boom the Best  Option for Tight, Obstructed  Worksites?

Working height alone does not determine whether an EWP can reach the job.

Awnings, warehouse racking, fixed machinery, structural steel and narrow access routes can prevent a platform from reaching the work area even when the machine has sufficient height.

For these sites, knuckle boom hire can provide the combination of vertical reach, horizontal outreach and up-and-over access needed to work around obstacles.

Also called an articulated boom lift or Z-boom, a knuckle boom uses hinged boom sections rather than extending in one straight line. All Access Hire provides electric, diesel and specialised knuckle booms for projects across Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich.

When knuckle boom hire is the right fit

Three site conditions usually indicate that an articulated boom should be considered.

An obstacle blocks the direct path

An awning, beam, racking system, roof edge or fixed piece of machinery can sit between the EWP and the work position.

A knuckle boom can raise the platform above the obstruction and then extend towards the target.

This up-and-over reach is useful for:

  • Building façade maintenance
  • HVAC and electrical servicing
  • Warehouse maintenance
  • Structural installation
  • Signage work
  • Access above fixed plant

For these jobs, compare the machine’s up-and-over clearance and horizontal reach rather than selecting it from maximum working height alone.

The machine cannot sit directly below the work

Site layouts often restrict where an EWP can be positioned.

Fixed equipment, pedestrian zones, landscaping or building structures may force the chassis to remain several metres away from the job.

An articulated boom can reach vertically and horizontally from that offset position.

Measure the distance between the proposed chassis position and the actual work area. That measurement can be more useful than simply asking for a 10 m, 15 m or 20 m boom.

Access to the work area is narrow

The EWP still has to reach its operating position.

Check doorways, gates, warehouse aisles, corners and turning areas along the complete access route.

All Access Hire’s Z30 Electric Knuckle Boom is one example of a machine designed for restricted indoor access. Its published specifications include:

  • 1.19 m stowed width
  • 11.14 m maximum working height
  • 6.5 m horizontal reach
  • 3.86 m up-and-over clearance

Its electric drive and non-marking tyres also suit warehouses, commercial fit-outs and other finished indoor environments.

Machine width should not be checked in isolation. Stowed height, length, turning space and floor loading can also determine whether an EWP can reach the work zone.

Five measurements to check before hiring

For a tight or obstructed site, record these five details:

  1. Working height
Measurethe actual position the operator needs to reach.
  2. Horizontal offset
Measurefrom the proposed chassis position to the work area.
  3. Obstacleheight
Record the height of any awning, beam, machinery or structure blocking the boom path.
  4. Narrowestaccess point
Measure gates, doorways and aisles along the route.
  5. Groundorfloor conditions
Check slopes, uneven surfaces, finished floors and any loading restrictions.

Site photos are also useful where several obstacles affect the machine’s position.

These measurements give All Access Hire enough information to assess the required working envelope rather than relying on working height alone.

Indoor, outdoor or difficult terrain?

The site environment helps determine which type of knuckle boom is suitable.

Indoor restricted access

Electric articulated booms are suited to warehouses, factories, shopping centres and commercial fit-outs where low noise, zero exhaust emissions and compact dimensions are required.

If the work is directly overhead and no horizontal reach is needed, a smaller platform such as the GS1932 Electric Scissor Lift may be a simpler choice.

If racking, machinery or another structure places the work to one side of the chassis, an electric knuckle boom provides the additional horizontal movement.

Tight access with uneven terrain

Some projects combine narrow access with slopes or irregular ground.

All Access Hire’s JIBBI 1250 EVO Crawler Boom has a published stowed width of 1.15 m and uses a crawler chassis for difficult access conditions.

It provides a maximum working height of 12.2 m and up to 7 m of horizontal reach.

A specialised crawler boom can therefore suit jobs where both machine width and terrain restrict the available options.

When another EWP may be better

A knuckle boom is not automatically the best machine for every restricted site.

Choose a scissor lift for direct vertical access

If the platform can sit directly below the task and only needs to travel vertically, a scissor lift may provide a simpler and more efficient solution.

Choose a straight boom for open, long-reach work

If the worksite is open, the boom path is clear and the target sits a long distance from the chassis, a telescopic or straight boom may provide greater horizontal outreach.

A knuckle boom earns its place where articulation solves a specific access problem.

Brisbane warehouse example

Consider lighting maintenance above fixed warehouse racking.

A scissor lift may fit inside the aisle but cannot move its platform horizontally beyond the racking.

A compact electric knuckle boom can remain within the aisle while extending the platform above and across the obstruction, provided its working envelope matches the job.

The deciding factor is not maximum height. It is the position of the work relative to the available floor space.

Safety around overhead obstacles

The structures that make articulated access useful can also create trapping and crushing hazards.

Operators should identify beams, ceilings, services and other overhead structures and maintain sufficient clearance while positioning the platform.

Queensland requires the appropriate WP high risk work licence for boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11 m or more under WorkSafe Queensland’s definition.

All Access Hire maintains and inspects its equipment before hire and supports customers in matching the machine to the site conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Are knuckle booms suitable for narrow spaces?

Selected models are. Compact electric and specialised knuckle booms can combine narrow machine dimensions with horizontal and up-and-over reach. Check the complete access routenot only the width of the chassis.

Can a knuckle boom reach over machinery or warehouse racking?

Yes, if the obstruction falls within the machine’s working envelope. Check the obstacle height, horizontal offset and published up-and-over clearance of the selected model.

Choosing a knuckle boom for restricted access

A knuckle boom is most useful when an elevated work position cannot be reached directly because of an obstacle, offset chassis position or restricted access route.

All Access Hire has completed 50,000+ hires and provides electric, diesel and specialised articulated boom lifts across Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich.

For indoor restricted access, review the Z30 Electric Knuckle Boom. For narrow access combined with difficult terrain, review the JIBBI 1250 EVO Crawler Boom.

Send All Access Hire the site dimensions and photos of the access route before booking so the team can recommend a machine with the required reach and access profile.
