In Australia, current regulations state that all personnel who work with or near scissor lifts must be trained and licenced. While scissor lifts are an incredibly helpful tool that can help complete a job at height efficiently and safely, they can be dangerous and can cause accidents leading to personal injuries as well as structural and equipment damage if not operated properly. At All Access Hire, we are your one-stop shop for all EWP’s, specialising in hiring high-quality reach and access equipment, including scissor lift hire in Brisbane. There are always risks involved when working at heights, so let’s take a look at the training and certification required to operate a scissor lift.
Training and Licensing
There are multiple registered training organisations in Australia that offer the course required to become a certified scissor lift operator. This course results in achieving an EWP Operator Ticket or Yellow Card as it is more commonly known. This qualification allows you to operate platforms up to 11 metres in height. If you are looking to operate platforms taller than 11 metres a High Risk Licence is required.
What is Involved in a Scissor Lift Training Course?
Training is usually completed within one day, taking up to 8 hours. The course is a combination of practical use and theory and teaches everything you need to know to operate a scissor lift properly, safely and to avoid accidents. The course will cover:
- The fundamentals of operating a scissor lift safely
- Navigating the lift both indoors around workers and equipment, and outdoors on different terrain
- Operational checks and equipment inspections
- Identification of hazards & accident prevention
- Emergency procedures and shut down
Can Anyone Learn to Operate a Scissor Lift?
There are no pre-requisite units required to complete a course in scissor lift operation, however applicants should be 18 years of age or above. Basic English, literacy and numeracy skills at a level sufficient to read and interpret workplace documentation are also desirable.
What Happens at the Completion of the Training?
Upon successful completion of the course your record of training is processed by the EWPA and you will receive an EWPA Operator Licence (yellow card) with the proof of training and your photograph on the card.
